The Hero’s Journey:
A Guide to Literature and Life

Q:  What is the target grade level for the material?

A: We designed the guide with 9th and 10th graders in mind, but it is being used successfully at many grade levels, from 7th grade to college. The units are very flexible and can be adapted to virtually any level by modifying the literature and films used and by increasing the depth of the thought and discussions. The curriculum also invites research and discussion in other disciplines, including philosophy, psychology, religion
and personal growth.

Q: What if I order the book and decide I can’t use it?

A: You have 30 days to review the book. It the curriculum is not what you need, simply return it for a refund (less shipping). Most orders we receive are by credit card, so when we receive the returned book, we issue a credit to your account.

Q:  Can I get help adapting the hero’s journey materials to my own curriculum?

A: Yes. I enjoy communicating with teachers and helping them make the best use of the curriculum in their classrooms. I have more than 30 years of classroom experience and have an MA in psychology, with a focus on the psychology of the journey process, which includes learning theory and adolescent psychology. I am happy to help whenever I can, at no charge.

Q:  Can the curriculum be used with classical myths, such as “The Odyssey?”

A: The curriculum focuses on the pattern of the heroic journey and the growth that takes place in the journey process, but it works very well with the classical hero myths. One of the curriculum’s strengths is that it presents a range of journey possibilities, from the traditional journeys taken by mythological heroes through the more psychological journeys taken in modern literature and film. The journey pattern presented in the curriculum can become a bridge connecting the themes of classical myth with the challenges we face in a modern, technological world.

Q:  Does the curriculum meet teaching standards as outlined by the various states?

A: Absolutely, and in fact, using the journey as a focal point for teaching appears to enable students to master many of the standards more quickly and thoroughly than most traditional methods of instruction. Because of the variety of standards used around the country, we do not link individual units to specific standards, but we do include goals for each unit which can be easily applied to whatever standards you are using.
